Samboan Uncovered: The Waterfall Capital of South Cebu

Tucked away at the southwestern tip of Cebu Island, Samboan is a coastal sanctuary where emerald river canyons cut through lush limestone jungles. Celebrated as the "Waterfall Capital of South Cebu," this quiet municipality sits roughly 140 kilometers south of Cebu City, facing the Tañon Strait. With a population of over 20,000 residents across its 15 barangays, Samboan offers an action-packed escape for adventurers, eco-tourists, and history enthusiasts looking to explore beyond the usual island crowds.

The municipality's primary draw is its stunning array of natural waterfalls, each offering a distinct experience. Aguinid Falls provides a hands-on adventure where visitors climb directly up multi-tiered limestone rock faces with the help of local guides. For sheer visual grandeur, Da-o Falls towers at 120 feet at the end of a scenic river canyon trek, while Binalayan Hidden Falls features a unique triple-drop cascade into a deep basin perfect for cliff-jumping and swimming.

Beyond its natural river networks, Samboan holds a rich cultural heritage preserved from the Spanish colonial period. Perched on a high coastal bluff, the town center features the 18th-century St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church, constructed entirely from coral stone. Adjacent to the church grounds stands the historic Campanario watchtower, built in 1798 to guard against pirate raids, and the Escala de Jacob, a historic 147-step stone staircase connecting the shore to the town proper above.

Reaching Samboan takes roughly three to four hours by bus from Cebu South Bus Terminal, making it easily accessible for day trips or longer stays. Local motorcycle taxis (habal-habal) provide convenient transport from the national highway to the inland waterfall trailheads. Whether you are scaling wet limestone walls, exploring century-old coral stone architecture, or enjoying views across the strait toward Negros Oriental, Samboan delivers one of the most rewarding eco-cultural destinations in southern Cebu
